Girls as you know I am totally enthralled by vintage design. One of the best exhibitions I ever saw was the Grace Kelly extravaganza in Monaco a few years back. Gown upon gown in the most delicious colours, and then the piece de resistence… her famous wedding gown. At that point your heart flutters and you can feel the magic of fashion, and how certain pieces are held in the minds of so many people, capturing a place, time or moment.
This week for AGT, I felt like I had stepped into one of Grace Kelly’s archived pieces. The dress was designed by Thurley which is a favourite label of mine based in Melbourne. It is called ‘Hello Sunshine’ in neon yellow lace from their SS12/13 show.
I am always intrigued about the life of a dress, and where the concept began, so here is Helen O’Connor (Thurley’s designer) to explain this gorgeous piece…
“The Hello Sunshine Gown was inspired during my walk to work on a grey, miserable, overcast winter morning. The sun was desperately trying to peak out from the clouds and for a moment it did, which made me realize how much I long for summer. I had an greige piece of French lace sitting on my desk for weeks and finally it occurred to me that a bright yellow dye would bring it to life, so we custom dyed it to try and capture the intensity of the sun. My favorite detail is the transparent tulle pockets, which are hidden until revealed by the wearer’s hands. I think wearing the dress almost gives the wearer the same positive warm glow that you get from the summer sun and so it was named Hello Sunshine!”
And here’s what my AGT stylist Ben Amery had to say about the dress…
“For five years I have dreamt of getting Dannii in this intense shade of yellow. I love the vintage feel of the large lace and shape of the dress, but dyed neon yellow it has a fresh and modern feel and we both thought it was a stroke of genius. Dannii always loves a jewel, so I accessorized with ‘Flutter’ Pearl, Citrine and Diamond earrings and a ‘Flutter’ pearl and diamond ring. We needed major height to offset the proportions of the dress so went with Dannii’s trusty Sergio Rossi ‘Cachet’ nude patent peep toe shoes. These focus attention on the incredible scalloped lace hem.”

Hair & make-up…
Okay girls, arm yourself with your makeup brushes and a sense of adventure….here are this week’s beauty notes from Fotini Hatzis:
"Neon Yellow and Dannii Minogue….where do I start?
The make-up: Unless you are strutting this colour down a runway, stick to beautiful soft makeup and leave the dress as drama. For statement pieces, simple is always best - keep the focus on the frock!
I used Giorgio Armani Luminious Silk foundation with a drop of MAC Care Blends essential oil for a beautiful luminous glow. Next I contoured around the temples with Burberry Nude glow bronzer No.03 to add a hint of warmth against the vibrant yellow of the dress.
For the cheeks this week we went for a nice rose gold in Nars called Orgasm. I ran a soft highlight across the cheekbones and bridge of the nose using MAC Play It Proper. On Dannii’s eyes, firstly I used Burberry Gold Trench No.04 as a wash over the eyes lids and applied Burberry Almond in the sockets. To keep the eyes soft, I pressed Stila Jewel eyeshadow in Golden Topaz which added a beautiful shimmer and subtle sparkle to the eye. To give impact I finished her eyes off with Bourjois 53 Feuille de Cuivre eyeliner.
For the extra wow factor we always use ModelCo Fibre Lash for the lashes. Lips were glossy and plumped using Burberry lip gloss No.04.
For the hair: Twiggy was the inspiration for this week’s look as the Thurley dress had such a beautiful vintage feel to it. We swept her hair over to add a bit of volume and tucked it behind the ears giving it an early ‘60s feel that worked a tomboy contrast to the glamorous dress.
To complete a look it was all about ‘thinking outside the box’. My simple trick was to use everyday eyelash glue to attach some pearl buttons along Dannii’s backbone, as the dress’ deeply dipping back was just screaming out to be a focal point.”
Makeup Tip: Brighten your eyes with a highlighter (shimmery or not). Putting a bit of your lightest eyeshadow around the inner corner of your eye will brighten it significantly. It really helps to open up the eyes and make them pop. Simply apply a small amount right by the tear duct.
As Fo says: “Doll I think I’m going to be banging on about this look!”
